Marcel Moyse Today: Preserving a Legacy, Reimagining a Tradition
As Executive Director of the Marcel Moyse Society, Robert Cart has led efforts to document and preserve the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most influential flute pedagogues. Drawing on the Society’s Legacy Project—including interviews with direct students of Marcel Moyse such as Susan Milan, James Galway, Raymond Guiot, Isabelle Chapuis, and Toshio Takahashi—this presentation explores what these firsthand accounts reveal about Moyse’s teaching, artistic philosophy, and continuing relevance for flutists today. More than a historical survey, the lecture examines how Moyse’s emphasis on singing tone, expressive communication, and musical imagination continues to inform flute performance and pedagogy in the twenty-first century.
